How to pick a DJ for your wedding

Filed under Wedding Planning, July 17th, 2011 by admin

The wedding ceremony alone is hard enough to plan, but do not forget about the reception! Some major things to think about for your perfect reception are your theme, food selections, drinks, decorations, entertainment, location, and so on. Now I know it is fun to pick out the perfect flowers, or the most beautiful centerpieces, but the most important part of planning your reception is picking the right people to help you. These people include the DJ, caterer, photographer, transportation, videographer, and so on. The following are some simple steps to consider when picking our wedding service providers. The model service for the steps below is “hiring the right DJ” but it applies to most service providers that you need to hire for your wedding.

Step 1: Meet your potential DJ

Just because your DJ’s company may be very well respected and have a great reputation, that does not guarantee that they are right for you. So to prevent this, be sure to meet your potential DJ! Every company, even the best and the biggest, have to hire new employees; this means that a new employee has to have a first show…and you do not want that to be yours. If you choose a large company to provide you with a DJ, be sure to meet the DJ that will actually be entertaining you and your guests. The DJ’s personality should be similar to your own, that way you are comfortable letting him be in control of even just a little part of your big day.

Step 2: Get a contract

Get everything in writing! The contract needs to include: your DJ’s actual name, the date, the time and the location of your even, the cost of the DJ’s services, and if there are stipulations in which the contract may be broken. You should be able to make your own “requirements”, as long as they are within reason, that will be included in the contract. If you are at all concerned about something in the contract, or lacking from the contract, make sure you get whatever it is in writing. Even if you don’t want a specific song played, be sure to mention it to your DJ.

Step 3: Consultation

Consultations are always a good thing. The DJ, or any service provider, should get to know you as much as possible. Just because they are the “professional” does not mean that they can bully you around. Remember this is your day, and you are the one paying them. Now if your DJ wants you to plan everything, including every song, just say no. Of course provide some guidance as to what kind of songs and maybe a few favorites, but don’t do all the work; that’s his job. Consultations should not cost more than the original price…meaning they should be included.

Step 4: Look at their music selections

Just because the DJ is affiliated with a radio station or even an agency, don’t automatically think all of their music will be what the radio station/ agency plays. If you like rock music, make sure that your DJ owns rock music, or if you love the latest and greatest, be sure to ask your DJ if their music library is updated. If you give notice in advance, you DJ should be able to accommodate special song requests.

Step 5: What if?

If you are someone who doesn’t worry, and never gets cold feet; then don’t worry about this part. Most of us, including me, worry that something will go wrong, or everything will not be perfect. If you think of a worst case scenario make sure you ask your DJ. Most experienced professionals will have dealt with this before and with help you drive away your fear. Be sure to have back up equipment just in case.
